AMPK: A Bridge between Inflammation and Metabolism

چکیده
Hypercholesterolemia and low-grade inflammation are both basic factors that contribute to the genesis and progression of atherosclerosis. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is proposed to be a key regulator of cellular and organismal metabolism. Increased evidence shows that AMPK signaling can inhibit inflammatory responses. The macrophages play a diverse array of roles in atherogenesis, such as scavenge ring, immune modulation, and as a source of chemotactic molecules and cytokines. It has been considered that macrophages are central to all stages of atherosclerosis. AMPK lies at the crossroads of metabolically driven macrophage inflammation. In this review we propose to introduce the roles of AMPK and macrophage in the early stage of atherosclerosis. A comprehensive understanding in the role of AMPK between energy metabolism and inflammation in atherosclerosis may contribute to development of novel approaches in anti-atherosclerosis treatment.

AMPK-associated signaling to bridge the gap between fuel metabolism and hepatocyte viability.
The adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and p70 ribosomal S6 kinase-1 pathway may serve as a key signaling flow that regulates energy metabolism; thus, this pathway becomes an attractive target for the treatment of liver diseases that result from metabolic derangements. In addition, AMPK emerges as a kinase that controls the redox-state and mitochondrial function, whose acti...

Background: AMPK and P53 proteins regulate the TOR protein in the TORC1 complex, which regulates many physiological processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of AMPK and P53 proteins on the TOR pathway following endurance training in the left ventricle of the heart of diabetic rats by streptozotocin and nicotinamide. Methods: In this experimental study, 12 head two-month-old ...

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an important mediator in maintaining cellular energy homeostasis. AMPK is activated in response to a shortage of energy. Once activated, AMPK can promote ATP production and regulate metabolic energy. AMPK is a known target for treating metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes; however, recently AMPK is emerging as a possible metabolic tumor suppressor and ta...
متن کاملNutrient Stress Activates Inflammation and Reduces Glucose Metabolism by Suppressing AMP-Activated Protein Kinase in the Heart
OBJECTIVE Heart failure is a major cause of mortality in diabetes and may be causally associated with altered metabolism. Recent reports indicate a role of inflammation in peripheral insulin resistance, but the impact of inflammation on cardiac metabolism is unknown. We investigated the effects of diet-induced obesity on cardiac inflammation and glucose metabolism in mice. RESEARCH DESIGN AND...
متن کاملTBK1 at the Crossroads of Inflammation and Energy Homeostasis in Adipose Tissue.
The noncanonical IKK family member TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) is activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, but its role in controlling metabolism remains unclear. Here, we report that the kinase uniquely controls energy metabolism. Tbk1 expression is increased in adipocytes of HFD-fed mice. Adipocyte-specific TBK1 knockout (ATKO) attenuates HFD-induced obesity by increasing energy expenditure;...
